Right, I've been avoiding my coping strategies like the plague for two weeks, so as you can imagine I am in a little bit of a state. I've got deadlines that I was cheerfully oblivious to until about an hour ago and like, a whole 8:45-17:15 shift that I just completely forgot existed until the manager rang me.

("Did you know that you're down to work at [library] today?"
"Am I?"
"That explains why you aren't there then!")

I also went to the doctor's today! [twitter.com profile] hardlyaverage was my responsibile adult, which was good because the plan was to ask my doctor if I could be tested for ADHD, and his reaction was... Pretty mild, but still "Are you sure you want that?"

Anyway, I THINK I've worked out what I need to get done tomorrow (proofreading, frantic reading, somehow trying to find time to swim AND write AND email about a shift I'm not sure I can do anymore, don't let myself get distracted doing the things that require no brainpower). I can do that! See you all tomorrow, hopefully when I've got a bit more done.

Using Dreamwidth as a Bullet Journal

In Jan 2019 I started a private/locked Dreamwidth as a domestic household management-type bullet journal. Dreamwidth tags trump a paper-based bujo's index system in so many ways.

DW as quasi-bujo is not a new concept by any means, but not sure if anyone has used DW and the power of its tags for personal non-fannish reasons.

*********I have been so intensely frustrated that there are no f@#$%^@$#^%#@^ household management apps that give me the same flexibility that I can find on DW.**************

Four months in, activities and records have built to the point where the value in backwards history can be seen. There are some sections I want to re-built, and digitally, I can do that without losing anything or, really, expending too much time. Some aspects have worked brilliantly, like a 12 month to-do list of major household upgrades - priorities keep shifting, so I can simply move the actions around without needing to constantly re-draw a task list. It works so simply.

The application of the quasi bujo typologies thus far are:

Neko Navy: Daydream Edition

This was probably only thing that could have recalled me from video game exile. All you really need to know is there is a level called Sausage Party, but if for some reason that's not enough...

Neko Navy CatsNeko Navy is a cat-themed horizontal cute-em-up in which the player pilots aforementioned flying cats through various equally-cute levels filled with whimsy and death. The three default cats represent the typical shooter styles. Grazing (which elicits a "Brave!" exclamation and is something I never tire of, both for the encouragement and because it's hard to see the meter when there's so much stuff all over the screen) fills up the cats' power meter, which allows the player to bomb. Each cat's bomb has a different spread (a beam, a stationary bomb, a screen-fill effect, etc.) but all turn bullets and collectibles into gold cubes. Additional cats can be unlocked. Credits are unlocked according to play time and lives are earned based on points, which encourages more aggressive scoring.

The game is fluid and fun to play, and a solid intro to the subgenre. File this away under Does The Thing Well Dept. It reminds me a lot of Trouble Witches in terms of style, though the easy mode is more accessible and has a gentler difficulty curve. Spiritually, it also reminds me of Harmful Park.

Tales from the TBR

The book: Seraphina by Rachel Hartman

The summary:

In the kingdom of Goredd, dragons and humans live and work side by side – while below the surface, tensions and hostility simmer.

The newest member of the royal court, a uniquely gifted musician named Seraphina, holds a deep secret of her own. One that she guards with all of her being.

When a member of the royal family is brutally murdered, Seraphina is drawn into the investigation alongside the dangerously perceptive—and dashing—Prince Lucien. But as the two uncover a sinister plot to destroy the wavering peace of the kingdom, Seraphina’s struggle to protect her secret becomes increasingly difficult… while its discovery could mean her very life.

How I found it: I don't remember the exact circumstances leading to the purchase of this specific copy last year, but I've been aware of the book since it came out in 2012. From the mid-90s through the early 2000s, Rachel Hartman wrote a minicomic, set in Goredd some years earlier, called Amy Unbounded, which was a delightful coming-of-age story about a young girl having adventures and learning her place in the world. (Sadly, the series is out of print, but it's worth tracking them down if you're interested, especially if there's a young girl in your life who needs an introduction to the world of comics.) So Seraphina went on my mental TBR, but I'm sure you all know how that can go.

What inspired me to read it now: Hartman's latest book, Tess of the Road, is a finalist for the Lodestar (the Not-a-Hugo Award for Best YA Book), and although I gather that it's not a direct sequel, I still wanted to read the Seraphina duology first.

The verdict: I have no idea why I waited so long to read this book, because it's a delight, although I could wish that the main character had read the situation and not waited quite so long to have some key honest conversations. (I find this trope particularly irritating, which is why I rounded my Goodreads rating down to four stars instead of up to five.) I fell in love with Seraphina as a narrator immediately, and I also adored Princess Glisselda and her best friend Millie. And also the prickly scholar Orma and the dashing and dogged Prince Lucian Kiggs. I could sit here and name favorites all day -- this world is full of fascinating characters, almost all of whom are easy to like (or dislike, in the case of many of the antagonists). Hartman's worldbuilding is both deep and intriguing, especially in the cases where she only drops hints -- draconic society, Goreddi religion (especially the heretic St. Yirtrudis -- I'm dying to learn more about her), the details of Goredd's relationship with its other neighbors. I also like her take on dragons: they are humanized and alien at the same time, just as any sentient species living among us would be. There are dozens of stories left to tell in this universe, and I will read every single one of them.

More thoughts, with spoilers. )

The primary goal of this Tales from the TBR series is to encourage me to read books that I already own. Although successful in this case, I have to call it a mixed success, because as soon as I finish this, I'm buying the sequel, because I have to know what happens next. Worth it, I'd say.

Right, here's the explanation for Fate/Prototype as I understand it: once upon a time, Type Moon took the original notes and setting they had for the Fate franchise and animated a tiny part of it! This was back when the anime apparently had a female protagonist (I AM SULKING THAT THEY CHANGED THIS) and Saber was a guy! I am confusion at the idea, but also very here for the idea of replacing Shirou with a goth girl who understands the plot and would rather not.

(Obviously the romances with Rin/Saber/Sakura would have to remain unchanged, gimme.)

No points were awarded for last week's prompt.

This week's prompt is #116 - Angeal Hewley

Get ready for some honor, pride and puppy scoldings in these drabbles! It's Angeal week.

Who is Angeal Hewley? What drew him to SOLDIER? Will he ever get Zack to be less impulsive? How does he relate to his boyhood friend, Genesis? How does he feel about Loveless? What is the long history of his sword? What does he do in his off time?

Drabbles can be from Angeal's point of view or just about him from afar, but they must include Angeal somewhere in just 100 words.
